Engineering Continental High-Speed Railway Corridors

The Ankara-Konya High-Speed Railway Project represents one of Eurasia’s most sophisticated rail infrastructure feats. Spanning 206 kilometers across challenging geological terrain, the double-track high-speed corridor reduced travel time between Turkey's capital city Ankara and historical industrial hub Konya from over 10 hours by highway to a rapid 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Engineering Consortium Synergies

Executed through a strategic partnership between GY & Sons Holding and leading international civil engineering corporations, the consortium delivered sub-base earthworks, ballastless track beds, heavy viaduct prestressed concrete box girders, and overhead catenary power transmission systems under strict international UIC railway standards.

Ankara Konya Bullet Train Viaduct

Advanced Heavy Civil Railway Technology

Track Infrastructure & Rail Bed

Heavy UIC-60 continuously welded steel rails anchored on pre-stressed concrete sleepers and low-vibration ballastless concrete slab track in high-speed zones.

  • 412 km of UIC-60 steel rails installed
  • Seismic-resilient concrete sleepers

Viaducts, Bridges & Tunnels

Construction of 14 massive concrete railway viaducts spanning valleys up to 60 meters high, 42 river bridges, and 7 cut-and-cover acoustic tunnel structures.

  • 14 Viaducts total length: 12.8 km
  • Pre-cast post-tensioned bridge girders

25kV Electrification & Substations

Complete overhead 25kV 50Hz AC catenary electrification system powered by 4 dedicated high-voltage traction substations along the 206 km corridor.

  • 550 Catenary gantries & mast towers
  • Automated power switching & SCADA

ERTMS Level 2 Digital Signaling

State-of-the-art European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS Level 2) with GSM-R digital radio communication and automatic train control (ATC) safety systems.

  • Cab-signaling for 250 km/h travel
  • Real-time GPS train tracking & dispatch

5-Phase Civil Execution Methodology

Alignment Earthworks & Deep Rock Cutting

Excavation of over 18 million cubic meters of earth and rock across the 206 km corridor, carving gentle gradients (maximum 1.5% grade) and wide curve radii (minimum 3,500m) essential for 250 km/h high-speed rail operations.

Viaduct Concrete Pier & Girder Launching

Erection of 14 major high-level railway viaducts using specialized launching gantries to place 40-meter pre-stressed concrete box girders across wide valleys and river basins without disturbing ground ecosystems.

Ballast Sub-Base & UIC-60 Rail Flash-Butt Welding

Laying of 800,000 tons of crushed granite ballast, concrete sleepers, and flash-butt welding of UIC-60 steel rails into continuous 1-kilometer track sections to eliminate rail joint vibration.

Catenary Electrification & ERTMS Signaling Installation

Installation of 550 catenary mast towers, 25kV overhead power wires, sub-station transformers, GSM-R radio masts, and balise transponders for ERTMS Level 2 cab-signaling systems.

Dynamic 250 km/h Speed Testing & Passenger Certification

Comprehensive dynamic testing using high-speed diagnostic trains up to 275 km/h, verifying track geometry, catenary pantograph contact voltage, signal latency, and safety commissioning.

Economic & Mobility Impact

85% Travel Time Reduction

Reduced passenger travel time between Ankara and Konya from 10.5 hours down to 1.5 hours, carrying millions of passengers annually.

Zero Emission Electric Transport

Displaced over 45,000 tons of annual CO2 emissions by shifting passenger traffic from highway motor vehicles to 100% electrified rail.

Regional Trade Corridor

Connected Anatolia's agricultural and manufacturing hubs to national trade centers, fostering rapid economic integration.
