Constructed between 2009 and 2013 and officially inaugurated on October 12, 2013, the Basra Sports City Stadium Complex stands as a landmark architectural marvel in the Middle East. Spanning over 580 hectares in Southern Iraq, the sports city serves as the primary home for the Iraq national football team and continental Arabian Gulf Cup championships.

Engineering Consortium Synergies

Delivered under a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract by GY & Sons Holding alongside leading international civil engineering corporations (Klas Iraq S.A. & Klas Teknik Yapı A.Ş.), the project brought together world-renowned structural engineering (Thornton Tomasetti) and architectural design (360 Architecture / Newport Global).

Earthworks, Excavation & Artificial Lake Canal Creation

Excavation of over 1.2 million cubic meters of earth in Southern Basra, creating the 350,000 m² artificial lake network and preparing 580 hectares of stabilized foundation ground.

Piling & 65,000 Pre-Cast Concrete Seating Bowl

Installation of 2,400 high-capacity concrete piles extending deep into bedrock, followed by the placement of pre-cast concrete tier units to form the double-deck 65,000 seating bowl.

Palm Lattice Facade & Cantilever Steel Roof

Assembly and erection of 12,500 metric tons of structural steel, crafting the iconic palm-frond geometric facade and 45-meter cantilevered canopy roof sheltering the seating tiers.

10,000 Secondary Arena & 4-Star Athlete Hotel

Simultaneous construction of the 10,000-seater secondary track-and-field stadium, 4 FIFA training pitches, and the 150-room athlete hotel towers with luxury VVIP suites and medical facilities.

Electromechanical Testing, FIFA Turf Layment & Inauguration

Installation of 2,200 Lux broadcast floodlighting, Bermuda natural grass turf layment, IAAF blue synthetic running track, and official grand opening on October 12, 2013 with 65,000 cheering fans.
